“Friends of the Baltic” organization is leading “EcoPatrol” project in Saint-Petersburg since 2011.
Sennoi Municipality is initiator of this project and supports approbation of annually updated EcoPatrol program during the European Week of Local Democracy. And in Spring several youth teams from various parts of St. Petersburg and Leningrad region will join the EcoPatrol action; this will be dedicated to Earth Day. One of the EcoPatrol priority subjects is efficient use and reduction of energy loss in buildings. This topic has close connection with SPARE project (school project of efficient use of energy and resources), which “Friend of the Baltic” organization is leading for more than 13 years.

The main goal of EcoPatrol is: growth of school children’s environmental awareness, attracting their attention and attention of adults to the problem of environmental conservation and leading them to find ecological solutions, which helps to reduce damage to nature from human actions.

EcoPatrol is designed to show students that energy and resources efficiency is the main points on the way to greener future.

Main subjects of EcoPatrol 2013:
- Energy efficient lighting
- Waste (resource efficiency)

During the training teachers were informed about illumination standards, power of energy efficient lightning devices, about the situation in town with the garbage and possible solutions. Teams received a set of waybills and devices for school and nearest yard research.
Several forms were proposed for reporting results, they can answer next questions:
- What problems were found
- What positive examples were marked
- What decisions team is proposing for situation improvement

In a month action groups of students will research the state lightning of their classes and other school rooms with illuminometer device. Pupils and teachers will compare received data and regulations to identify inconsistencies.
Than teams will decide how to improve the quality of illumination with economic and energy efficient way. Student conclusions can help schools to perform Federal law №261 about energy efficiency which requires all institutions of the state budget to reduce power consumption by 15% from 2010 to 2015.

Pupils with teacher guidance will inspect yard sites for waste collection and make conclusions about: what kind of garbage can be recycled, reused, and which one must never be in this dumpster (hazardous). After that EcoPatrol participants will interview local people, other pupils and their parents about reuse and waste recycling. Among others the questionary will include folowing issues:
- There is more garbage in St. Petersburg becoming every day, are you concerned about it? (9 millon tons per year – it’s a cube higher than our TV tower)
- Have you been ever involved in collection of waste paper, scrap metal, or giving jars to the store?

When the job is done EcoPatrol teams will make suggestions to improve the situation.

The results of researches and proposals will be presented by students during the final conference, which will be held in Russian Geographical Society building in the end of April. This event is taking place in the Year of the Environment.

Next schools were taking part in our training: № 91, 403, 16, school №68 Pavlovsk city, lyceum №389 «Center of Environmental Education», gymnasium 85, Palace of Children Creativity «Pavlovsky», lyceum №273, gymnasium 261 Kirovskiy region.

Many of these educational institutions are long-term partners of “Friends of the Baltic” organization and they had already participated in our others ecological projects and programs.

We are always happy to see familiar faces in our trainings and seminars. And we hope that new participants got many interesting information and will surprise us with their research results.

Good luck to young EcoPatrol.
