Round Table of River Watch Network

March 2: a «River Watch» network round table was held in St.Petersburg.

Participants exchanged information on the ecological status of rivers, taken under the supervision of school groups.
In Pavlovsk now the cleaning Slavjanka river is made with industrial method. At the same time livestock dies in the river. Students began to observe the river Kuzminka arising from Slavyanka’ 21-kilometer point, they develop an environmental laboratory «Archimedes» and noted that this complex sometimes gives errors by not sensing oxygen.

Much environmental work is being done on river Luga by Kigisepp Stations for young naturalists. T.Chernova, a school guidance councelor, told about it at an international CCB seminar, dedicated to the restoration of Luga as a salmon-rich river.

River Watch group of School 389 (Center for Continuous Education, Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry) is working on rivers Dudergofka, Ekateringofka and Krasnen’kaya. Krasnen’kaya gets runoff from a heating power station, coal terminal and oil from the industrial zone of Avtovo. There is a lot of heat pollution, thus heavy eutrophication. But in Ekateringofka and Dudergofka the pollution has decreased a bit lately.

In Pesochnoye settlement students study Chernaya river, conduct rapid investigations called the lessons of water. Head teacher Natalia Novoselova and her students start working on the study of phosphates in washing powders.

The RW group from Lodeynoye Pole works on rivers of Svirsky Nature Reserve. River that flows out of Svir is still contaminated with sewage from a military district (in the southern part of town).

Students from Primorsky district watch ponds of Yuntolovsky nature reserve. They note that in this area animals get extinct and biodiversity is reduced. The river Gluharka is in the very bad condition which is evident from the organoleptic characteristics. In summer students work also on the river Bistritsa of the Luga basin.

Group of several schools watch Murinsky stream — and they note the large number of drains, some of which look like sewer drains. Organoleptic parameters show high water pollution — turbidity and smell.

Kids from the Petrogradskij District are working on the ponds of Central Park of Culture and Recreation and the river Zhdanovka. They investigate the nature and remove litter.

On river Popovka students from Kolpinsky district have seen the situation getting improved — they associate it with the reduction of the experimental station of the Institute of Plant Industry.

Almost in all schools where there are River Watch groups, Friends of the Baltic volunteers have held the Baltic sea lessons. Best volunteers will take part in an international camp which will be held by Friends of the Baltic and the Finnish Nature League in August.

O. Senova described the situation with the newly established Basin Council of the Baltic Sea, established within the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia framework. The Basin Coulcil begins its work on the basis of Neva-Ladoga Basin Management, and Friends of the Baltic are planning to work with this Council.

Round Table decided to hold the 2010 River Festival which Friends of the Baltic with its partners traditionally have conducted for the 6th time by river Dudergofka in the south-western part of St.Petersburg.
