Friends of the Baltic presented plans and activities for the 2016-2017 school year

At the round table, which was held in St. Petersburg on September 14th, Friends of the Baltic team announced programs and projects for the upcoming academic year. Teachers and environmental activists were invited to cooperate on various issues - environmental education, energy saving measures, green solutions for nature conservation, climate change, and conservation of rivers and Baltic Sea. Both long-term partners of Friends of the Baltic and new organizations from St.Petersburg and Luga river basin, interested in future cooperation, participated in the discussion.

Climate change and energy saving
Darya Mytareva presented SPARE international project, which Friends of the Baltic coordinates for more than 10 years in St. Petersburg and Russia. The main project’ event is an annual competition of school projects "Energy and Environment" – it has already been announced among the SPARE network. It’s still possible to apply to the competition, the project should be about one of the following topics: energy efficiency improvement, energy saving, renewable energy, climate change, information dissemination about low-carbon solutions on the local and individual levels, and other relevant activities.All SPARE publications you can find on the web-page, and

The Baltic Sea and rivers
Priority area of the Friends of the Baltic’s activities is the public river monitoring network’s development and network expansion through the involvement of the new youth groups. «River Watch» International program joined more than 20 local school groups teachers studying water quality in water bodies of St.Petersburg and Leningrad region under the leadership of active teachers. Results of investigations and main findings have been presented at the annual Interregional Scientific and Practical Conference of pupils «Environmental monitoring of small rivers and the Gulf of Finland». The conference 2016 will be held on October 22nd in Peterghof town (on the South shore of the Gulf of Finland). Friends of the Baltic invite to the conference 5-11thgrade scholars, experienced in environmental investigations.

Year of Ecology 2017
Friends of the Baltic prepare a number of educational activities within the framework of the Year of Ecology in 2017 in St. Petersburg. Moreover, Friends of the Baltic cooperate with the relevant committees of Leningrad region Administration to implement a number of educational actions in Leningrad region, focusing on the Water Basin of Luga River– the only river in the Baltic Sea basin, where the reproduction of wild salmon still exists.

Because of interest of Kingisepp municipality and a great experience of educational organizations in this town, the River Festival 2017 (the annual mass youth nature protection action, organized year by year on the various rivers) will be held at the Luga River in Kingisepp. More than 100 participants from Kingisepp and other territories of Luga river basin around, and moreover participants from other areas of Leningrad region and St. Petersburg will participate in the event. Schoolchildren, teachers, environmental activists, local authorities will join to the Festival. The event will held under the support of Neva-Ladoga Basin Water Directorate and the relevant committees of Leningrad region Administration.
