Young Gulf of Finland coast’s inhabitants tell about the state of their environment

October, the 11th: a traditional environmental youth conference was held in Lomonosov, it was organized by Friends of the Baltic NGO and the Center for children’s technical creativity.
The conference, dedicated to river watch, to the results of children’s expeditions and to research of the state of environment, was supported by the Municipal Council and the administration of “City of Lomonosov” municipality, together with the international Coalition Clean Baltic.
At the conference, school children of Lomonosov spoke of the state of river Karasta, about the diversity of animals and plants species on its banks, about their observations of the wonderful nature in the park of the state museum-nature reserve Oranienbaum.
The kids presented the results of their environmental expedition in the summer of 2008, along the Karelian isthmus, the results of hydrochemical tests of water objects, shared their impressions of the rare animal and plant species that they happened to see, about the diversity of insects.
The pupils presented a very interesting eco-trail across the city of Kronshtadt, which included observations of the gulf, of the canals of Kronshtadt, the port area and the wonderful historical sights. The authors of the eco-trail were sorry to mention that water transparency in both the canals and the gulf is very low, which testifies of the poor conditions of the local environment. It is remarkable, that water quality, observed by the school children in the vicinity of the port, was no inferior, but even superior to one in other areas – as the result of ongoing water treatment and shore cleaning
The conference greeted its guests from the northern bank of the gulf of Finland.
Pupils from the House of children’s creativity from the city of Primorsk spoke about the environmental state of the lakes of Bolshoy Berezovy island. Those islands are a protected natural area, that along with Lebyazhiy and Kurgalsky reserves are of international importance for the rest and feeding of birds on the way of their yearly migrations. Young researchers mentioned the gradual eutrophication of several lakes of the island.
Pupils from Primorsk studied the sources of potable water in their city as well, and they found out that the water in the wells is far from being clean. Water from natural wells is cleaner, but young ecologists do recommend using carbon water filters (like “Aquafor”) to obtain clear drinking water.
Pupils from Pesochnoe (Kurortny region) spoke of the spring of Serafim Sarovsky, of their forest observations, and of their eco-trail.
On the conference’s agenda were reports about the state of the coast of the gulf near Peterhof, about Chernaya river on the northern coast of the gulf.
The presentations showed that the kids, who do environmental research, value the unique nature of their land and understand the urge for its conservation. They draw reasonable conclusions about how to behave oneself in order not to harm nature and one’s health, and share their recommendations with their peers and the grown-ups.
