Pilot ecosanitation demonstration sites in Leningrad region

Coalition Clean Baltic Friends of the Baltic CEI

One of considerable contributors to the nutrient load to the Baltic Sea is runoff from toilets in rural areas in the Leningrad region, Russia. Over 700000 people reside constantly in rural settlements in this area, and about 2 million more come to rest here in summer. The traditional toilet in the area is a pit latrine with no treatment of excreta. Knowledge of ecotechnologies for possible solutions of this problem is almost absent among the population.

Within the Baltic Green Belt project, the Centre for Environmental Initiatives & Friends of the Baltic have built two pilot demonstration sites in Leningrad One of the sites is located on the South shore of the Gulf of Finland, and the other - on the North shore. The overall project goal is protection of rivers and Baltic Sea ecosystems by reduction of nutrient load on the Gulf of Finland. The specific goal of the activities is demonstration, wide dissemination among the public and promotion of environmentally friendly technologies for treatment of toilet wastes in rural areas.

Pilot Demonstration Ecotoilet on the South shore of the Gulf of Finland is a part of the larger building, which includes also a shower and a tank for warming water in summer on the top. The toilet proper is in the right-hand side of the building.

The toilet includes the toilet seat and a water dispenser.

The toilet seat is specially designed for separation of excreta fractions. Filings are used to cover faeces if needed.
Faeces are collected in a stainless steel box and then removed to composting tanks. Urine is collected in 15-liter tanks behind the toilet building.
For convenience of men, a urinal is also provided. To demonstrate possibilities of low-cost solutions, the urinal is made of a cheap plastic bottle, instead of using a manufactured one.
Toilet wastes processing and utilization

The urine is being kept for three months and then is applied as a fertilizer in the garden, kitchen-garden and on lawns, being diluted in water in 1:10 ratio.

Two different types of composting tanks are tested on the site – plastic and concrete ones. The plastic facility provides ingress of air through openings on its side, and a special pipe is used for this purpose in the concrete tank.

Dissemination and promotion

The sites are the basis for promotion of ecosanitation technologies in single-family country houses among residents of villages, gardening communities, and other rural settlements.
All toilet “visitors” – members of the family and all their guests and neighbors can read in the toilet the leaflet about its mission and functioning.

Media work includes interviews and media visit to the demonstration sites.

Information on eco-toilets is presented at the public demonstration & educational centre Ecocentrum. We demonstrate it to all visitors: students, teachers, municipal specialists, NGO activists, ordinary citizens.

The idea and first experiences were presented and discussed at the NGO round table.

Guided tours to the demonstration sites are of high interest for dacha owners.
