Environmental Information Marathon in Peterhof

November, 18-20 a lection course and interactive classes for pupils were organized by Friends of the Baltic at Peterhof. The topic was "How can we help the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland"

Environmental educational marathon was held by specialists from the organization "Friends of the Baltic” at Guschin library in Petrodvorets district of St. Petersburg.

The exhibition of posters "Live Baltic" was introduced to the local residents, as well as schoolchildren and teachers from schools of Peterhof. The exhibition describes the natural values of our sea, sources of contamination and threats and ways to reduce the pollution and preserve the natural environment of the sea and coast.

A set of lectures about the ecological situation in the Gulf of Finland and ways to help the Baltic Sea was held for pupils, teachers and library staff.

The volunteer programme “Baltic Sea Ambassadors” was presented to the elder pupils who can participate in it themselves – study materials about the Baltic Sea, become “ambassadors” and carry out Baltic Sea Lessons for younger schoolchildren.

The practical “stations” were organized for pupils. At one station the pupils get acquainted with the fish fauna of the Gulf of Finland and with the peculiarities of different fish species in our part of the Baltic Sea. At the other – they learned about methods of wastewater treatment and how one can reduce the flow of pollutants into water by reducing use of phosphate-containing detergents, chemicals and garden fertilizers. At the third station pupils tried to remove the oil spill modeled on the plate. They discussed how oil gets into the water, how to reduce risks of oil spills and what kind of alternatives to the "oil energy" exist.

A literature exhibition about the Baltic Sea was opened at the library. It contains materials provided by Friends of the Baltic, Coalition Clean Baltic and other specialists from many different organizations of the Baltic region.

The exhibition is open for local population and guests of Peterhof during several weeks, as well as the exhibition "Live Baltic".
